Matt Beck, the main character in this story, is also the main character from The Assassin. It's set before The Assassin takes place. In this story, Beck is summoned to a town by a woman who was raped by a cowboy.

I've written the character of Nick Mason as a tribute to some of the great detectives I grew up watching such as Jim Rockford, Ellery Queen, Sherlock Holmes, Charlie Chan, Nick Charles. This will be the first in the series which will eventually contain at least 10-15 stories.

Growing up as a hockey fan my favorite players were never the superstars but the role players who played the game rough and tough. Guys like Bob Probert, Dave Brown, and Dan Kordic. I wrote this to honor the tough guys who don't get the recognition of doing a tough job.
